The State Liberals have called on the Weatherill Labor Government to take action to ensure that algae problems in the River Torrens are finally fixed.

Algae blooms in the River Torrens have been an ongoing issue for years and yesterday the River experienced a bloom of green duckweed.

“Causes of the green and blue-green blooms in the River Torrens are well-known and successive trials have been conducted to determine the best management methods,” said Shadow Environment Minister Michelle Lensink.

“The Federal Government has even contributed $1 million to improve the health of the river.

“So why don’t we have a solution to this problem?

“It’s embarrassing that this problem has resurfaced at one of our busiest times of the year with thousands of tourists flocking to Adelaide for various events, including the Clipsal, Fringe Festival and Womad.

“The River Torrens is also a very important component of Adelaide’s Riverbank precinct, used by many Adelaideans every day.

“This is a very serious problem and the Weatherill Labor Government must take action to ensure that it is finally fixed.”
