State-wide Code Red declared to help vulnerable South Australians during extreme heat

A state-wide Code Red has been activated across South Australia to help the community’s most
vulnerable during this week’s extreme heat.

"Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the activation would make extra services available to help people experiencing homelessness cope with the heat."

“In response to predicted very high temperatures over the coming week, the State Government has put in place a state-wide Code Red response from today until Saturday March 2,” said Minister Lensink.

“This means that homelessness agencies across South Australia will boost their services during the hot weather, including increasing outreach services, which will help people sleeping rough to keep cool and remain hydrated."

“I urge all South Australians this week to check on the community, particularly the vulnerable, including the elderly, people with disability or mental illness or who might be housebound.”

The following inner-city services in Adelaide will provide Code Red support:

Westcare (Baptist Care SA) 11/19 Millers Court Adelaide, will extend its hours of operation from Monday to Wednesday from 9am-7pm. Opening overnight on Thursday 28 February to Saturday 2 March (no admittance after 7pm - closing for cleaning 7am-9am).

Trace-A-Place (SYC) 135 Currie Street Adelaide, will extend its hours from 5pm-7pm Monday 25 February to Friday 1 March.

Hutt Street Centre 257 Hutt Street, will extend its hours from 7am-5pm Monday 25 February to Wednesday 27 February.

Street to Home will be providing additional outreach services to people rough sleeping throughout this period.

In regional areas, homelessness agencies will provide services to people who need help during the extreme heat.

The Homelessness Gateway Service will continue to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Anyone who is rough sleeping is encouraged to contact the Homelessness Gateway on 1800 003 308.
