The State Liberals are launching an online petition calling on Independent Government Ministers Martin Hamilton-Smith and Geoff Brock to support the State Liberals’ marine parks Bill in support of regional jobs and the fishing industry.

This legislation has already passed Parliament’s Legislative Council with crossbench support.

This month Parliament’s House of Assembly will vote on amendments to the State Liberals’ marine parks legislation.

“The State Liberals are calling on Mr Brock and Mr Hamilton-Smith to vote with the Liberals in protecting regional jobs and local economies,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

“The regional unemployment rate stands at 7.2 per cent, with 1,600 more unemployed in the past 12 months alone.

“The last thing our State’s regions need are more job losses, which is what will happen if marine parks are introduced in their current form.”

“The Weatherill Labor Government’s marine park boundaries have been widely condemned by the fishing industry, recreational fishers and regional communities,” said Shadow Environment Minister Michelle Lensink.

“The State Liberals support marine parks, but not the current zones proposed by the Weatherill Labor Government.

“Marine parks must be well-designed to be effective and this includes undertaking proper environmental mapping and baseline studies. However, this did not take place in SA.” The State Liberals’ marine parks petition can be signed at http://www.saveregionaljobs.com/
