Labor MPs snub mental health

Mental Health Minister Carmel Zollo today refused to attend the Parliamentary Select Committee into Mental Health, calling into question her government’s commitment to helping people with mental illness, according to Liberal MP Michelle Lensink.

“This is just childish, petty politics on behalf of the Rann Labor Government,” Ms Lensink said.

“Carmel Zollo is the State’s Mental Health Minister, but refused to attend today’s meeting.

“She has effectively snubbed all South Australians affected by mental illness.”

Ms Zollo, along with Labor colleague Gail Gago, did not turn-up to the meeting, scheduled for 2pm.

“The Mental Health Coalition’s Geoff Harris and SA Public Advocate John Harley were witnesses called to give evidence at today’s meeting,” Ms Lensink said.

“They were not interested in political point-scoring, and deserved the full attention of Ms Zollo, who is the head of mental health in this State.

“It is shameful for her to put Labor’s grubby tactics ahead of the needs of South Australians.

“This sends a clear message that the Rann Government does not take mental health seriously.”
