Extreme weather forecast triggers Code Blue for Adelaide and Southern regions

A Code Blue extreme winter weather response to help people sleeping rough stay dry and safe has been activated in the metropolitan area and Southern regions of the state today.

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the Code Blue activation would assist people sleeping rough overnight.

“Due to the predicted heavy rain, damaging winds and thunderstorms across Adelaide and our Southern regions from today, a Code Blue has been called by the SA Housing Authority in conjunction with the Homelessness Gateway Service in these areas to assist those who need it,” said Minister Lensink.

The affected regional areas include the Fleurieu, Kangaroo Island, Murray Bridge, Berri, Port Pirie, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Mt Gambier.

In Adelaide services include:
• Baptist Care’s Westcare Centre at 11/19 Millers Ct,will be open overnight from 3pm tonight
through to 7am tomorrow. The Westcare Centre is located at 11/19 Millers Ct Adelaide.
• Hutt St Centre 257 Hutt St Centre will extended their operating hours until 5pm
• Trace-A-Place (SYC) at 135 Currie St Adelaide will extend their operating hours until 7pm

“For people sleeping rough in these regional areas over the next few days, the Homelessness Gateway Service on 1800 003 308 can help find shelter if you need assistance,” said Minister Lensink.

The Homelessness Gateway operates 24/7 every day of the year. Anyone experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness in encouraged to call the Gateway at any time.

Minister Lensink thanked the people working to help rough sleepers stay warm and safe. “Thank you to everyone on the ground who provides support to our most vulnerable South Australians and help our community stay warm and dry in extreme winter weather,” said Minister Lensink.

Last month, South Australian homelessness services reconfirmed the current criteria and parameters as sufficient for activating a Code Blue
