The State Government‘s Code Blue emergency winter response for people sleeping rough across the state remains in place until tomorrow morning, due to the current cold and wet conditions.
Activated yesterday, 85 people were assisted, including 41 people who were provided with overnight shelter.
The Code Blue activation ensures there is shelter available overnight for rough sleepers during extreme winter weather conditions.
Housing SA, together with its non-government partners, is making additional accommodation available for extended hours across the state today tonight, due to the severe weather.
In the Adelaide CBD, the
- Westcare Centre at 11/19 Millers Court, Adelaide will reopen at 5pm this evening and remain open until tomorrow morning; and
- The Hutt St Centre, 258 Hutt St, is open until 5pm this evening.
The Street to Home homeless outreach service in the Adelaide inner city will monitor people sleeping rough in the city to advise them where to go to find shelter and organise to the centre transport if required.
Housing SA will work with its regional partners to ensure shelter and outreach services are available during the Code Blue.
Information about regional arrangements and emergency accommodation is available through the South Australia’s Homelessness Gateway phone 1800 003 308. People who are sleeping rough, or people assisting them, can phone the gateway at any time.
Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink thanked the people working to help rough sleepers stay warm and safe.
“In these extreme weather conditions, these people do a tremendous job, making sure our community’s most vulnerable have safe place to stay until the weather eases.”
The Department of Human Services activates a Code Blue when temperatures drop below an average night-time low of 6°C, when gusty winds make being unsheltered potentially dangerous, or heavy rainfall makes it difficult for unsheltered people to stay dry.
