The State Liberals’ Marine Parks Bill sought to change the current boundaries of the Weatherill Labor Government’s marine park sanctuary zones and had already passed Parliament’s Legislative Council with crossbench support.
Regional Development and Local Government Minister Geoff Brock also turned his back on regional South Australians by voting against the State Liberals’ Bill.
“Today is a sad day for regional South Australians,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.
“It is disappointing that Minister Brock – who is supposed to be representing regional South Australians – has abandoned regional South Australians by voting against this Bill.
“Today, Minister Brock has a lot to answer for.
“As the Minister for Local Government, Geoff Brock has also gone against the wishes of local councils, who had strongly endorsed the State Liberals’ Bill.
“The Weatherill Labor Government’s marine park zones have been widely condemned by the fishing industry, recreational fishers and regional communities.
“The State Liberals support marine parks, but not the current zones proposed by the Weatherill Labor Government.
“Marine parks must be well-designed to be effective and this includes undertaking proper environmental mapping and baseline studies – this did not take place in SA.
“The Weatherill Labor Government’s marine parks will cause job losses and significant damage to the South Australian fishing industry.
“Today is a day which will be remembered as the day that regional South Australians were abandoned by Geoff Brock and the Weatherill Labor Government.”
